April 17-19, 2017 We went on a 3-day trek to the Maragua crater, organized by Condor Tours. It was really more a 2-day trek because the last day consisted mainly of getting on the bus and eating lunch. Those 2 days were doozies, though. We walked around 18km both days, all above 3000m, which got us good and tired. Danielle especially felt the elevation/exertion. We’d planned for this by me carrying all our stuff, but going up hill was still a struggle for her.
April 9-16, 2017 After the overnight bus, we arrived in Cusco early and tired. We could eat breakfast at our hostel, but not check in until noon. So we killed time at one of Cusco’s expensive cafes and the main square. At this point I had Cusco pegged as another shithole with overpriced tourist facilities. Later, having spent a bit more time in the city and being caught up on sleep, I got to quite like the town.
April 7-8, 2017 Oruro is not a usual tourist stop. We just stopped there to break up a long busride. We’d heard some scary stories about Bolivian buses and didn’t want our first Bolivian bus experience to be a disaster. It ended up being about 4 hours on nice paved roads. We arrived in Oruro in the afternoon, and had no problem walking to our hostel. We didn’t do anything else that day besides eat, and buy me a hat.
