May 8 - May 14, 2017 We arrived back in Santa Cruz in the evening after our visit to San Miguelito. The next day we decided to visit the zoo. It was closed, but we enjoyed it anyway, because of all the sloths we saw. The zoo has sloths free roaming through its trees, and they escape quite often. Walking around the outside fence, we spotted 6 or 7 sloths, 3 of which had left the zoo itself.
May 4 - May 7, 2017 We got off the plane in Santa Cruz, and took a taxi straight to Nick’s Adventures to pay for the tour we had organized over e-mail the preceding few days. Santa Cruz is a big, modern city. The main road from the airport is flanked first by stores selling farm equipment, car dealerships, and (getting closer to the city) strip malls, then finally the usual store fronts we’ve seen everywhere in Bolivia.
April 30 - May 4, 2017 Tarija was our official rest city. It’s not a very touristy city, although it does have a nice downtown area and is the wine capital of Bolivia. At just 1,850 meters high, breathing is not an issue at all. The weather is usually good. Parts felt a lot like Southern California. I got off to a bit of a rough start by falling down the stairs while exiting the bus.
